Description
On June 30, 2026, a fire destroyed buildings at Entsu-ji (Entsu Sodo), a Rinzai Nanzen-ji school training monastery in Matsushima-cho, Imari, Saga Prefecture. The wooden main hall, built in 1884, and the adjoining kuri living quarters were destroyed, along with the shoin and inryo. The temple is said to have been founded in the 14th century and previously housed the Imari Prefecture government office. The fire was reported around 3:30–3:40 a.m. and was extinguished about seven hours later. Two trainee monks in the kuri escaped; the head priest was away. No injuries were reported. A nearby nursery and high school closed for the day. On July 6, Imari police arrested a 28-year-old trainee monk on suspicion of arson of an inhabited structure. He told investigators he set fire to the second floor of the kuri and that he had become sick of his life and dissatisfied with the amount and severity of training. Saga District Public Prosecutors later began a mental-competency evaluation. The case remains under investigation.

On September 1, 2026, a fire broke out at Seianji Temple (清安寺) in the Asa district of Sanyo-Onoda, Yamaguchi Prefecture. A witness reported the temple on fire around 10:40 a.m. About 11 fire vehicles responded, and the fire was extinguished around 5:27 p.m. after roughly seven hours. Contemporary reports said the temple was expected to have been completely destroyed, with the main hall believed burned. Four residents, including two teenagers, lived at the temple but were all away when the fire began; no injuries were reported. Police and fire authorities are investigating the cause.

On August 31, 2026, a large fire broke out at Meirin Shopping Street (明倫商店街) in Iwabuchi 1-chome, Ise, Mie Prefecture, immediately beside Kintetsu Ujiyamada Station and about 600–700 meters from Ise Jingu Geku. Multiple emergency calls came in around 3:15 p.m. About 12 fire vehicles responded. The fire spread rapidly through densely packed wooden commercial buildings. It was largely brought under control during the evening of August 31, but hot spots and smoldering continued until the fire was declared extinguished around 11:00 a.m. on September 2—about 44 hours after the first calls. Ise City reported 58 buildings affected (5 residences and 53 shops and warehouses) and about 4,300 m² burned. An adjacent hall was also damaged. No deaths or injuries were reported. An evacuation order covered 249 households (528 people) in Iwabuchi 1-chome; about 280 households lost power. Investigators believe the fire originated near the arcade entrance closest to the station. The cause remains under investigation and should not be classified as arson unless authorities confirm that.

On August 21, 2026, a fire occurred at Nishinomiya Shrine in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture. Shrine staff discovered flames on two tree stumps outside the shrine wall around 5:40–6:00 p.m. Some reports described fire spreading to part of the outer wall. The fire was extinguished within about 20 minutes. No injuries were reported. Police and fire authorities are investigating the cause. Some Japanese media used the term 不審火 (suspicious fire); the cause has not been officially determined.
