On August 31, 2026, a large fire broke out at Meirin Shopping Street (明倫商店街) in Iwabuchi 1-chome, Ise, Mie Prefecture, immediately beside Kintetsu Ujiyamada Station and about 600–700 meters from Ise Jingu Geku. Multiple emergency calls came in around 3:15 p.m. About 12 fire vehicles responded. The fire spread rapidly through densely packed wooden commercial buildings. It was largely brought under control during the evening of August 31, but hot spots and smoldering continued until the fire was declared extinguished around 11:00 a.m. on September 2—about 44 hours after the first calls. Ise City reported 58 buildings affected (5 residences and 53 shops and warehouses) and about 4,300 m² burned. An adjacent hall was also damaged. No deaths or injuries were reported. An evacuation order covered 249 households (528 people) in Iwabuchi 1-chome; about 280 households lost power. Investigators believe the fire originated near the arcade entrance closest to the station. The cause remains under investigation and should not be classified as arson unless authorities confirm that.

History
Meirin Shopping Street is a long-established commercial district in central Ise. It began around 1947 as a postwar civic market and developed into a traditional arcade street of small independent shops serving residents and visitors. Before the fire it had about 52 storefronts, of which roughly 27 were actively operating; many vacant units remained. The dense wooden arcade layout helped the fire spread. The street sits next to Kintetsu Ujiyamada Station and about 600–700 meters from Ise Jingu Geku (Outer Shrine), and about 4 km from Naiku—but it is not part of Ise Jingu. Reports said fire approached a nearby wooded shrine area; the shrine itself was not reported to have burned. A monument commemorating pitcher Eiji Sawamura, born nearby, stood in the district. The long-term economic and cultural impact is still being assessed.

On September 1, 2026, a fire broke out at Seianji Temple (清安寺) in the Asa district of Sanyo-Onoda, Yamaguchi Prefecture. A witness reported the temple on fire around 10:40 a.m. About 11 fire vehicles responded, and the fire was extinguished around 5:27 p.m. after roughly seven hours. Contemporary reports said the temple was expected to have been completely destroyed, with the main hall believed burned. Four residents, including two teenagers, lived at the temple but were all away when the fire began; no injuries were reported. Police and fire authorities are investigating the cause.

On August 21, 2026, a fire occurred at Nishinomiya Shrine in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture. Shrine staff discovered flames on two tree stumps outside the shrine wall around 5:40–6:00 p.m. Some reports described fire spreading to part of the outer wall. The fire was extinguished within about 20 minutes. No injuries were reported. Police and fire authorities are investigating the cause. Some Japanese media used the term 不審火 (suspicious fire); the cause has not been officially determined.

On August 18, 2026, a fire burned the main hall and residence of Sairin-ji, a Soto Zen temple in the Kase area of Saga City, founded in 1615. The fire was reported around 10:30–10:40 a.m. It was largely suppressed about one hour later. The priest, in his 70s, and his wife evacuated safely. About 207 children at a nearby certified childcare center were moved to a building farther from the fire; no injuries were reported. Police said the priest told them he had been burning dry grass on the temple grounds. Police and fire authorities are investigating whether the fire spread from that burning.
